Revenge still the motivation for Varsity Ironmen. Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Just one week after heading down to London and defeating the #3 ranked Falcons, the Ironmen boarded a bus for a 10 hour trek to take on the #1 ranked Sault Ste Marie Sabercats. The Cats defeated the Ironmen 8-7 at their home in double overtime earlier this season, and were favoured to repeat their efforts.
However, the Ironmen planned  a different ending to what may possibly turn out to be a fairytale ending to their 2010 season. With all the distractions of league politics, major injuries, and previous internal strife no one could fathom that the team would survive in the most competitive league in the province. But there they were, over 800kms from home with what felt like everything to lose, and everything to prove.  Saturdays game lived up to all its hype and anticipation, but when the dust finally settled the Ironmen were on the winning side of a 21-16 contest. The Ironmen opened up the scoring with a field goal by Julien Hooker, but the Sabercats arial attack answered right back finding broken coverage in the Ironmen secondary and outfighting the Ironmen on jump balls to score two quick majors and generate a 16-3 first quarter lead.

The Ironmen then turned to their own air attack led by QB Zach Lascelle who found multiple receivers including Andrew Shultz, Mike Hayes, and Jordan Rebello, before finding Curtis Pryce on a 30 yard hitch and go for the touchdown to close the gap to 16-10 at the half. The second half started much like the first with the Ironmen driving the ball into Cats territory and Hooker splitting the uprights for 3 more points. The Sabercats who have struggled kicking all year attempted to punt the ball through the end zone for a single only to have rookie LB Renato Rossi pick up a blocked punt and sprint 80 plus yard for the major and eventual game winner. The Sabercats had a late chance to go ahead only to have a pass intercepted by Rossi to finish the game. "I'm proud of the team and the determination they showed. Anytime you fall behind by two touchdowns to a premier team like the Soo the result is usually unfavourable. If revenge is the motivation it's working and the team has been given enough fuel to prove something to the OVFL" commented coach Underhill.

The Ironmen will now face long time rival Essex Ravens for the Conference Finals at the Toronto Rogers Center on Sunday August 15th @ 7:00pm.

Revenge is sweet for Varsity Ironmen.
Over the last two years the only 3 games that the Ironmen have lost in regulation time has been at the hands of the London Falcons. One of those losses coming last week with the Falcons edging the Ironmen 11-7. However, all that has now been erased as the Ironmen travelled to London for the first round of playoffs to beat the Falcons convincingly 20-3 at Western University. "We had a game plan and executed it perfectly" commented coach Underhill as the offence pounded the ball down the throat of the Falcons defence. Touchdowns were recorded by QB Zach Lascalle one yard plunge, and an 18 yard scamper by RB Ryan Silvestri. The return of RB Ryan Kotar was a crucial part of the Ironmen success. The Defence showed the league why they are the best in the province, holding the London run game to negative yards and forcing eight turnovers. DB Steve Ventresca led the way with two interceptions a fumble recovery and an onside kick recovery. Dylan Campbell had two interceptions, and Matt Rowan tallied one. LB Renato Rossi had a fumble recovery, and the D-Line led by Matt Brady and Anthony Dinguana manned the steel curtain with both recording multiple sacks.
The Ironmen now take their momentum to the Soo to take on the Sabrecats who defeated the Ironmen 8-7 in double overtime.

The Ironmen defence showed their usual dominance in a close 11-7 loss to the rival London Falcons.

The Ironmen led by DE Matt Brady completely shut down Londons run game forcing the Falcons to to throw interceptions to Dylan Campbell, Steve Ventresca, and Anthony Dinguanna. The defence gave up only one TD after the Ironmen offence was intercepted in Ironmen territory. Besides the odd carry and a Ryan Silvestri 22yd TD run early in the game the Ironmen offence looked inept and one dimensional. QB Ryan Brady was sacked numerous times as he struggled to find receivers down field all day.

"Offensive inconsistency, turnovers, and penalties killed us again " stated Coach Underhill. "The team will have to play with a sense of urgency if we are going to be successful against London in the playoffs".

Varsity --In Sault St. Marie

On the weekend the Varsity Ironmen made the long trek to Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Sabrecats in a highly anticipated contest. As with all of the Ironmen games this year, the defence was huge. In a tough, physical game, the Ironmen defence thwarted the efforts of the high powered Soo offence. With two key interceptions, a blocked punt, and numerous big tackles, the Ironmen shut out the opponents for most of the game. At the half the score was indicative of the tough battle it was, 0-0.

The second half was much like the first. Unfortunately an Ironmen turnover at their own 10 yard line led to the only score the Sabrecats would get on the defense. However, the ironmen responded on the next drive. Marching the ball downfield , the Ironmen replied when Ryan Silvestri carried the ball across the goal line. That was it for regulation.

In the first OT period, the Soo went first and were held by the Ironmen defence. Unfortunately the offence couldn’t capitalize. In the second OT period it was the same for the Offence. The drive stalled, and a field goal attempt from 45 yards out sailed just wide. On the Soo turn, they marched to the 13 where they punted through the end zone to win with  the single point, 8-7.

A great game to be sure, and a tough way to lose the first one of the season. Next up is London in a rematch of last year's close playoff battle.

OVFL Varsity Offensive Player Of the Week #1 Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Congratulations to Ryan Kotar on being named this year's OVFL Week #1 Offensive player of the week.

Ryan Kotar #5
Ryan Kotar #5

Ryan carried the ball 42 times for 237 yards and 2 touchdowns and 13 first downs. Amazing start to the 2010 Varsity season.

The long tradition of OVFL season openers began at McMasters Ron Joyce Stadium, as the Varsity Ironmen prepared to battle the Niagara Spears in the scorching heat. This Golden Horseshoe rivalry had previously displayed high scoring overtime battles with the Spears taking the advantage in the wins column over the duration of the match-ups. This game had the potential to live up to the expectation of the nail biting excitement and atmosphere with both squads claiming to be talented this season. The Ironmen who were led by Veteran RB Ryan Kotar who pounded the ball against an exhausted Spears defense, and found the back of the endzone two times. Kotar was helped by his running partner Ryan Silvestri bringing in another touchdown to put the Ironmen up 21-0 and Julian Hooker adding the singles. However the Spears who adjusted well and made a QB substitution were able to settle the nerves and cash in on slotback Curtis Kelly's touchdown, with less then two minutes in the half. Coming out for the second half behind 21-6 the Spears looked to be firing on all cylinders and led an air assault scoring two majors, including a long touchdown by Max Cameron and a 2pt convert to tie the game at 21-21. After a blocked Ironmen punt the Spears split the uprights for 3, and a 24-21 lead. The Ironmen held strong with Kotar and the O-Line punishing the Spears defense. Julian Hooker captured a single on a missed field goal, and the defense forced the Spears to give-up a 2pt safety knotting the game at 24-24. The Ironmen took the next possession and marched to th Spears six yard line, with the help of Kotar's one yard plunge on fourth down, and a 15 yard Spears bench penalty. With only 1.3 seconds left on the clock the Julian Hooker closed the deal by converting a field goal, and giving the Ironmen a 27-24 win at their new McMaster home field. Head Coach Rob Underhill stated " I am extremely happy with the result and proud of the players as they showed how to remain composed and focussed in the face of adversity. It's a great starting point for the season". Other strong performances came from HB Frank Cerino who had one interception, and a fumble recovery, and Defensive Line who were able to shut down the Spears run game.

Next game is Saturday June 5th at Mississauga.
